Discover Dortmund!
Dortmund is one of the leading logistics locations in Germany. Over the last 10 years the region has also developed into an important logistics hub for Europe.
640 companies in logistics and related sectors employ over 24.000 people. Well known companies such as Rhenus, Dachser , DHL and FedEx have extended their capacities in Dortmund over the last 10 years. In addition this Westphalian city has developed into a center for logistics planning, software and plant construction.
Trade
The region is an important center for trade logistics with a large variety of goods distributions centers. At the moment there are around 50 wholesale logistics centers. Renowned companies such as Kaufland, Tedi, ThyssenSchulte Stahlhandel and ETL Fiege Tire Logistics have all set up their distribution centers here.
European distribution
With the extension of the EU to the east, Dortmund has now moved to the central point of logistics in Europe. Rhenus and DHL Solutions operate logistics centers with European-wide coverage for their customers such as Douglas, Thalia and Johnson&Johnson. Dortmund also beat Piacenza and Rotterdam to win the bid for IKEA’s European distribution center. In addition to its European Warehouse, IKEA also operates a Customer Distribution Center on an area of over 100 hectares serving customers in Germany and the Benelux states.
e-Logistics
Dortmund’s IT sector is also specialized in connecting IT and logistics. Many companies like w³logistics, Salomon Automation or proLogistik are specialists for logistics solutions. There is also expertise at the interface between commerce, logistics and IT: Arvato connects e-commerce, call centers and logistics as a full e-logistics service. IKEA built its e-commerce distribution center here and Fraunhofer Institute for Materials Flow and Logistics (IML) in cooperation with SSI Schäfer Noell implemented Tower24, a concept for covering the “last mile“ for example for books or even for delivering frozen food.
